Almost 3 years after Apple announced its ground breaking Thunderbolt USB-C MacBook Pro models, the tech giant's sleek aluminium machines could finally embrace a companion they deserve. Introducing StayGo, renown Apple accessories maker Twelve South's latest addition to its tightly knit product lineup.
The South California based family-run company is known for bringing some of the most innovative Apple-exclusive accessories to the world, such as the BookBook series. The team's patient and detail-oriented approach to product design has won the hearts of millions of Apple fanboys.
Before the release of StayGo, we had some serious doubles about Twelve South's move to make a Type-C hub. The world was almost 3 years into Apple's USB-C evolution and have seen the rise of some prominent brands in the categories such as Satechi and HyperDrive. And the market was already over flooded with cheap alternative anyway. Literally no dongles could impress us anymore.
Boy was I wrong!
Sporting three USB 3.0 ports, a 4K HDMI port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and a SD / Micro SD Card reader, StayGo is capable of covering the day-to-day needs of most prosumer users. In fact, it has one of the best internal chipsets we have seen in similar hubs. The most common complaint we hear about non-Apple USB-C dongles is their stability when multiple ports are being used, especially HDMI. We are happy to report that StayGo delivers the most consistent HDMI connections among what we have tested so far.
But the real genius is in the 2 removable cables in comes with: A 1-meter cable that allows you to keep the clutter away and manage the cords neatly on the desktop when you stay, not to mention the delightful L-shaped connector on your MacBook; and a short, 6-inch travel cable for your needs on the go. The innovative flexibility sets the device apart from the rest, solving a problem we knew existed but never bothered to fix.
What we also love about StayGo is the jet black colour scheme on the gadget - not space grey, not silver, just straight up black. We live in a tech world where accessory manufacturers are eager to match their products with the latest "Apple colour" to be appealing. Yet the designers of Twelve South have proven time and again that their products don't have to mimic the look of Apple in order to carry the essence of it. And for that, we take off our hat to them.
Give StayGo a try. It may not be your first USB-C hub, but it is probably going to be your last.
